The estate itself played a major role in shaping Castlecomer. Carefully planned and developed, the town became a centre of skilled trade and craftsmanship, with stone buildings, workshops, and homes for artisans and workers. Over time, generations of families contributed to a strong culture of making, building, and community life that became deeply rooted in the area.

Today, that same spirit continues in a new form. The restored stables and yard buildings now house a growing community of craftspeople, artists, and small creative businesses. Carefully preserved and adapted, these historic spaces provide a unique setting where traditional character meets modern creativity.

Now part of the wider Castlecomer Discovery Park, the Craft Yard sits within 80 acres of woodland, lakes, walking trails, and outdoor experiences. Visitors can explore the tree-top walk, sculpture trail, fishing lakes, playground, and peaceful forest paths, all within one connected heritage and nature destination.

From its origins as a working estate yard to its role today as a creative hub, Castlecomer Craft Yard continues to evolve while staying rooted in its history — a place where heritage, craftsmanship, and community come together. Today, it is home to studios and makers working within these historic buildings, continuing a tradition of craft and creativity that has been part of this place for centuries.

Almost 400 years ago, the Wandesforde family arrived from Yorkshire and began shaping Castlecomer into a unique estate town built on craft, trade, and industry. What started as a vision in the 1600s grew into a thriving community of makers, workers, and artisans — a legacy that still lives on today in Castlecomer Craft Yard.Set within the historic grounds of the former Castlecomer Discovery Park, the Craft Yard occupies what was once the estate’s working farmyard, stables, and kitchen gardens.
